As the Crime Investigation Department (CID) tightens its noose on former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas’s brother Swarup Biswas, officials from the probe agency took the former president of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) to Kolkata’s Suruchi Sangha Club on Tuesday and conducted a raid.

Swarup Biswas was remanded to police custody by a court in Kolkata till June 18. He was produced before the Alipore Court, where the Judge rejected his bail plea.

Swarup was taken into custody on Thursday night (June 5, 2026) in connection with an alleged extortion racket operating in the Tollygunge film and television industry, according to a PTI report.

The charges include extortion, molestation, indecent behaviour towards women, criminal intimidation, and violations of the Arms Act.

From technicians to renowned artists, many have accused Swarup of acting like the “unofficial mafia” of Tollygunge, reports said. It is alleged that Swarup has subjected artists in the area to oppression for 15 consecutive years.

Swarup was arrested from his residence in New Alipore. He faces a multitude of charges, ranging from extortion and molestation to attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon.
